Zenith Sangma Resigns From TMC, Back to Congress

Exclusive

In a major political reshuffle in Meghalaya, Zenith M. Sangma, the younger brother of former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, has formally resigned from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and is set to rejoin the Indian National Congress, signaling a strategic revival for the party in the Garo Hills.

A letter dated October 28, 2025, from K.C. Venugopal, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), informed Dr. A. Chellakumar, the party’s Meghalaya in-charge, that the Congress President has approved Zenith Sangma’s rejoining. Zenith’s resignation from TMC, addressed to its Meghalaya leadership, cited his decision to step down from the post of Vice President and from primary membership of the party with immediate effect, stating it was time to begin a new chapter aligned with his vision for the people.

With Zenith’s return, the Congress not only regains a symbolic stronghold in the region but also strengthens its Opposition front ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls. Political analysts say this move exposes internal fissures in the Meghalaya TMC and boosts Congress’ prospects of consolidating the Garo Hills vote bank, reaffirming its relevance in the state’s volatile political landscape.
