Acting on specific intelligence inputs about suspected Bangladeshi nationals travelling from Srinagar to Bangladesh via Shillong, a joint team of the Special Cell and Special Operations Team (SOT) intercepted a tourist vehicle at ISBT Junction, Mawlai Mawiong Sunday.

The operation, conducted at around 8:42 PM, led to the detention of five individuals travelling in a tourist vehicle bearing registration number ML-05 51358. During preliminary questioning, the occupants failed to produce valid documents and later admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals.

The detained individuals have been identified as Md. Alamgir Mia (25) of Habiganj, Lelepa Begum (40) of Silit Muli Bazar, Musanat Jahana Khatoon (35) of Sonamganj, Md. Imammul Hassan (18) of Habiganj, and Md. Fajid Bilal (47) of Bangao — all residents of Bangladesh.

Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, confirmed the arrests, stating, “All five have been arrested and a criminal case has been taken up at Mawlai Police Station to investigate further into the matter.”

Police sources said investigations are underway to determine how the group entered India and whether any local facilitators were involved in aiding their transit through Meghalaya.
