From Ruin to Revival: Raibah Village Unites to Transform Local School into Model of Change

In the remote village of Raibah in East Khasi Hills, a government school once on the brink of collapse has been transformed into a thriving centre of learning and community pride. The turnaround began in 2021 when teacher Batskhem Thabah took charge of the Raibah Government LP School and initiated a grassroots revival. Mobilizing local residents, he led efforts to restore the school’s crumbling infrastructure and neglected premises. What followed was a wave of collective action that breathed new life into the campus.

With support from institutions and NGOs, the school introduced innovative, child-centric teaching methods and established both a mini library and a Living Library to preserve and showcase local heritage. Students are now actively engaged in experiential learning, environmental initiatives, and reading activities that have reshaped the academic environment. The Raibah School today stands as a compelling example of how one educator’s vision, backed by community resolve, can redefine rural education and restore hope in forgotten corners.
