Rumours Swirl Over Mukul Sangma’s Next Move as NPP Weighs Rajya Sabha Strategy Amid Political Churn

Following an electoral debacle of TMC in West Bengal, the murmures and rumours started spreading about the future of TMC in Meghalaya, although, the state unit of TMC is silent but once again the rumours started spreading about possibility of former Chief Minister and Leader of TMC Legislature Party in the state, Dr Mukul Sangma joining NPP, triggering fresh political speculation in the State and lending a new dimension to the evolving equations within the ruling dispensation as well as the Opposition landscape.
Amidst the whispers in the corridor of power, the developments have coincided with growing chatter around the impending Rajya Sabha vacancy, intensifying political calculations across party lines. Asked about the swirling speculation, MDA Government Spokesperson in Meghalaya Wailadmiki Shylla said, “In politics anything can happen,” while maintaining that he does not have any report as such, even as the rumours, which gained ground following exit poll predictions, suggest that Dr Mukul Sangma is likely to join the ruling NPP.
Shylla further said, “As of now there are four or five names have come out for the Rajya Sabha seat, however, the decision is yet to be taken.” Emphasising the role of the party leadership, he added, “It is upto the party high command to sit and decide. The meeting will be soon,” indicating that a formal decision is expected in the near future.
The political buzz comes against the backdrop of the impending conclusion of the term of sitting Rajya Sabha member Wanweiroy Kharlukhi on June 21, 2026, with internal discussions within the National People’s Party gathering momentum and signalling early positioning ahead of the vacancy. Sources indicated that a section of the party leadership from the Garo Hills region has strongly pitched for James Sangma as the nominee, citing the need for a more assertive voice in Parliament, stating, “We want someone to debate in RS.”
Even as Sangma’s name continues to gain traction within party circles, another NPP leader, while confirming the development, remarked, “There cannot be smoke without fire,” underlining the growing intensity of political undercurrents as Meghalaya’s political landscape heads towards a potentially significant realignment.
