GHADC Polls: BJP Hints at Selective Contest, ‘Will Not Pick Candidates From Street’, Says Hek

Senior Meghalaya BJP leader AL Hek hinted that the party may not contest all the 29 seats in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections expected to be held mid this year, making it clear that the BJP will adopt a selective, winnability-driven approach and will not field candidates “from the street” as it sharpens its electoral strategy for the crucial council polls.

With the festive season over and political activity regaining momentum across the Garo Hills, the BJP’s top leadership is signalling a clear shift from token participation to calibrated political engagement, prioritising candidate credibility, organisational strength and electoral arithmetic over blanket seat coverage.

Speaking to media persons, Hek asserted that the party is determined to avoid repeating past mistakes of fielding unsuitable candidates merely to fill seats, stressing that introspection and course correction are now central to the BJP’s GHADC roadmap.

Emphasising that the number of seats the party contests will depend entirely on the quality of candidates available, Hek said, “See, it depends on how many candidates we are getting, If we’re getting a good candidate not just any candidate like that just picked up from the like we have done in the past  picked up from say from the street, we don’t want this to happen,” underlining a sharper internal screening process. He further cautioned against repeating past errors, stating, “and repeating  again and again this kind of mistake which we have been done in the past. So now we have to be very careful. We have to be study carefully and ensure that when we contest, it should be a straight good contest with all the candidate or candidates from the different political parties, contesting the GHADC elections.”

Indicating that the party has already activated its grassroots machinery, Hek revealed that political surveys and organisational strengthening are being pursued simultaneously to consolidate the BJP’s base in the region. Outlining the party’s twin-pronged strategy, he said, “We are doing not only the survey at the same time We are also enrolling and do the enrollment to strengthen the party organization.”
