West Garo Hills Police Arrest Three in Rajabala Incident, CM Calls for Calm and Communal Harmony

With the West Garo Hills police arresting three accused in connection with the incident reported from Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday said the administration is acting swiftly and decisively to bring all those involved to justice, even as efforts are underway to maintain peace and communal harmony in the region. 

The Chief Minister said, “Three people have been arrested and the police is working tirelessly to find the rest of the people who were involved in this heinous crime.”

 He said the Deputy Commissioner has called members of civil society to constitute a Peace Committee to ensure that all related matters are discussed in detail. 

Recalling the incident, Sangma said, “Yesterday there was a very tragic and a very unfortunate incident that took place in Garo Hills where one youth lost his life and one was seriously injured.” Condemning the attack, he added, “We condemn this particular incident and at the same time, express our condolences to the members of the bereaved family.” Appealing for restraint, CM Sangma urged, “At this point in time I would like to urge the citizens of Garo Hills that we must ensure that peace and communal harmony continues to be there in Garo Hills.” He also cautioned against misinformation, stating, “There will be a lot of news that maybe circulated in social media, please filter them carefully.” Reassuring the public, he said, “Let me assure the citizens that the police and the administration is on its job and we will ensure that strict action and all the people involved in this heinous crime are brought to Justice.”

As per official information, the incident was reported on January 9, 2026, at around 2:00 pm from Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station, where a member of ACHIK NGO,  Dilseng M. Sangma, son of Gaban Ch. Marak of Amokgre, Phulbari, West Garo Hills district, was assaulted by unidentified persons. He was rushed to Bhaitbari CHC and referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on the way. West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma, IPS, said, “Police teams have already been deployed to trace those involved, and all efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the perpetrators involved in the incident at the earliest.” 

The District Police have appealed to citizens to maintain peace and harmony and refrain from spreading or circulating any unverified or provocative content on social media, cautioning that such actions may disturb communal harmony in the district.
