VPP Chief Ardent Basaiawmoit Seeks Independent Probe Into MLA Scheme Implementation

Voice of the People Party president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has written to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, urging the government to order an independent inquiry into the implementation of MLAs’ schemes across Meghalaya. In his letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Basaiawmoit referred to Conrad Sangma’s recent remarks expressing concern over how MLA schemes are being executed, “especially in constituencies representing by members belonging to the opposition party.”

Basaiawmoit said he appreciated the Chief Minister’s “concern and apprehensions” and endorsed his view that “MLAs’ schemes should be properly utilised and implemented in a transparent manner.” He informed the Chief Minister that the VPP, which “believes in transparency and accountability,” had already issued a letter to its own legislators, directing them to ensure that MLA schemes are implemented transparently.

Taking cue from Conrad Sangma’s concerns, the VPP chief said he now seeks “an independent enquiry into the implementation of MLA’s schemes in the State, to be immediately constituted by the government.” He further suggested that the probe should begin “from the year 2008 onwards, starting from 22 – Nongkrem Constituency and subsequently to be followed by other constituencies.”

Basaiawmoit expressed hope that the Chief Minister would “seriously consider this matter so that the people of the State will be more informed about the entire issue.”
