Ghar Wapsi Wave: Winnerson D. Sangma Rejoins Congress, More Joining Soon

It was a moment of Ghar Wapsi as Former Salmanpara constituency Winnerson D. Sangma, who left Congress in 2021 along with Dr Mukul Sangma and others and merged with All India Trinamool Congress, later joined BJP for a brief period of time before Lok Sabha elections has rejoined Congress recently, the party sources said he has applied for the party ticket for Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections schedule to be held next year.

“I have already joined and applied for the party ticket for GHADC elections,” Sangma said.

Adding to the ongoing political realignment in the Garo Hills, John Leslee Sangma, a prominent UDP leader from Garo Hills, is likely to join the Congress this week. John Leslee, who has already reached Shillong, is expected to meet Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent H. Pala to formalise his switch to the party.

Meanwhile, Sadhiarani M. Sangma, sitting MDC from the Trinamool Congress, is also set to join Congress soon, further strengthening the party’s consolidation effort ahead of the GHADC elections.

It may be mentioned that the Congress party in Meghalaya has so far received applications from around 67 individuals seeking party tickets for the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). Sources in the Congress said “…..applications were invited some time ago, and more than 67 applications have been received so far. These applications will now move from the block to the district level and will finally reach the state level after being shortlisted.”

The final list of candidates is likely to be announced within this year after obtaining consent from the All India Congress Committee (AICC). However, if the GHADC elections are deferred, there will be changes in the schedule for declaring the candidates.
