In a startling twist to the recent murder that has shaken Sohra, Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang pointed to the district’s long-standing peaceful reputation, underscoring how the brutal crime is entirely out of character for the region.

“Sohra Police Station, under whose jurisdiction this crime had taken place, has the lowest crime rate of all the police stations in the state of Meghalaya. There has been no record of any murder taking place for more than decades,” stated DGP Nongrang.

Referring to the initial version of events shared by the victim’s family, she remarked, “So for us, initially, when we knew the family came and said that, no, the crime has taken place, and this is a robbery gone bla bla—it didn’t gel with what Sohra actually is.”

Describing the socio-cultural fabric of the region, she added, “Basically, the Khasi and Garo people are not inherently violent.”

In a pointed message to the media, she advised, “Media should have checked before ‘crime-prone’ level,” expressing concern over sensational labels being attached to one of the state’s most peaceful areas.

As investigators continue to unravel the case, the state police chief’s remarks serve as a sharp reminder of Sohra’s otherwise non-violent legacy—and the cultural context that makes this crime all the more disturbing.
