Sonam, Raj Sent to Judicial Custody in Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case

Shillong, June 21: In a major development in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, a local court in Shillong on Friday remanded the victim’s wife Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha to 13 days of judicial custody after the completion of their police custody.

“Sonam and Raj, they were produced before the honourable Court today at the end of police custody. They are remanded back to judicial custody of 13 days. There was no demand from police for police custody. Till now nothing is there, and if required, police may ask — it depends on the investigation,” said Public Prosecutor Tushar Chandra.

On Thursday, the other three accused—Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—were also sent to 14 days of judicial custody.

Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore, was murdered on May 23 while on his honeymoon in Meghalaya. His decomposed body was discovered on June 2 from a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Sohra. According to police, Sonam and Raj allegedly conspired to kill him with the assistance of the three other accused.

Sonam was brought to Shillong by the Meghalaya Police’s Special Investigation Team shortly after midnight on June 11, while the four other accused were brought on transit remand the next day. All five were initially remanded to eight days of police custody. On June 13, Sonam and Raj were further remanded to two more days of police custody, which concluded on Friday.
