Monsoon Misery: Children Wade Through River as Ildek Bridge Lies Incomplete

Every monsoon, students from Badaka Chinalsa under Adokgre in North Garo Hills are forced to wade through the swollen Ildek River just to attend school. With no bridge in place, the journey becomes treacherous—especially during heavy rains—putting young lives at daily risk.

The bridge over the Ildek was first proposed during the tenure of former MLA Elstone D. Marak but was later desanctioned. In 2017, under then-Kharkutta MLA Cherak W. Momin, the RCC bridge was re-sanctioned. In January 2018, then Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma laid the foundation, and construction began. Yet, seven years later, the bridge remains incomplete.

Despite repeated appeals—and with the area now represented by Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin—the long-pending project continues to leave villagers isolated and students battling nature just to access education.
