With Poll Clock Ticking, Congress Backs SIR Push, Flags Illegal Immigration

With barely two years left for the Meghalaya Assembly elections, the demand for cleansing electoral rolls has gained fresh urgency, as Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Deborah C Marak said if the Election Commission of India can start the Special Intensive Revision exercise that will be a welcoming step, while asserting that in case of illegal immigrants it is the duty of the State government to act and follow Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s path in case it’s illegal immigrants, not in the case of genuine residents.

“I think this (SIR) is the demand of NGOs also, I think if they (ECI) can Start it then it is welcoming steps.”

The Congress leader further added, “Yes definitely if we need to write we will write from the party side. Our writing to the government if it helps the people of Meghalaya definitely we will do it.”

Asked if Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma should follow the path of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa sarma in evicting illigal immigrants from the state, Marak said, “if it’s illegal (immigrants) then it is the duty of the state Government, I am not saying in case of geniune residents.”

“Illegal immigration is a problem in all over India, the government should find out the root cause and find out mechanism, so that we can curb it and stop it in future,” she added.
