Thousands Join Congress in Rangsakona, Signaling Party Revival

In a significant political development, several thousand people from Rangsakona Constituency—the supporters of former MLA Zenith Sangma—formally joined the Congress on Wednesday, marking a boost for the party in the region. The event comes in the wake of former Rangsakona legislator Zenith Sangma’s rejoining the Congress in October, which set the stage for his supporters to shift allegiance to the party. On Wednesday, a large number of his supporters took part in the joining programme held at Rangsakona, reaffirming their support. Addressing the gathering, Zenith Sangma explained to the people of his constituency the reason why he rejoined the Congress.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee President Vincent H. Pala turned nostalgic as he revisited Rangsakona and said, “I am very grateful to Zenith Sangma for making this day. We have already made him join in Shillong. Today is not only for Zenith Sangma, but also to all of you who have come here. I really appreciate your voice, your force, who made Zenith Sangma come to the Congress. I think he already explained why he had to come back to the Congress. Zenith, when he left the party at that time, he is the only politician who used to be in touch with us. Most of them, after going from the Congress, feel shy to talk to us or to meet us. But I appreciate the attitude of Zenith Sangma who always, we may have different parties, but we always were in touch as good friends or as human beings. Today, he is here, the credit goes to Saleng and Deborah and Matthew and Dr. Chellakumar who were, for the last two, three months, working on how to make this day a success. I know it’s a challenge to be in Congress nowadays because we are in the opposition. We are in Delhi in opposition. We are here in opposition, but politics is dynamic. Zenith Sangma comes here not for his personal benefits because we are in the opposition; he should have joined the ruling, but Zenith Sangma came here because he is fighting for the farmers, he is fighting for the youth, he’s fighting for those who are unemployed, he is fighting for those who have been used by the present government with drug abuse, and never in the history of Meghalaya has drugs been so much in Jaintia Hills, Khasi Hills, and even in Garo Hills. Zenith Sangma is here to fight.”

The event was attended by senior Congress leaders, including All India Congress Committee Incharge Dr. A. Chellakumar, MPCC President Vincent H. Pala, Member of Parliament from Tura Parliamentary Constituency Saleng A. Sangma, MPCC Working President Deborah C. Marak, and other key party functionaries. The mass joining demonstrates a calibrated political consolidation by the Congress, reinforcing its revival trajectory as returning leaders and grassroots supporters rekindle the party’s organisational strength in Meghalaya.
