Next Assembly Session Likely to Be Convened at Mawdiangdiang as Construction Enters Final Stretch

The next session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, slated for August, is likely to be convened at the new Assembly complex in Mawdiangdiang, marking a significant institutional transition to the State’s emerging administrative nucleus at the New Shillong Township. The announcement was made on Friday by Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma following a multi-party visit by legislators to the under-construction complex.

The Speaker, accompanied by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma, Cabinet Ministers, legislators from both the treasury and Opposition benches, and senior officials, inspected the progress of the project after undertaking a symbolic bus ride to the New Shillong Township. The visit underscored the State’s push to consolidate its key institutions within the fast-developing administrative corridor. With the Autumn session approaching, contractors have been directed to expedite work to ensure the complex is ready for legislative business.
“The Chief Minister suggested that we will have bus tour of New Shillong Township city. The new Secretariat which is coming up — the progress is very good — we went to visit there and ultimately have come here in the new Assembly building. So far the progress for the construction of new Assembly building is good but we have a very hard timeline. We have to finish by June or July because the next Assembly session is due in August, and so we want to finish it before that. We have asked the contractors to do the work in three shifts — that means round the clock — for early completion. Interior works are going on,” the Speaker said.

He indicated that work is being carried out in multiple shifts to adhere to the accelerated schedule, with interior finishing and allied installations currently underway.
