In what is being read as both symbolism and strategy, the Congress under the leadership of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee President Vincent H. Pala and Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma is bracing for a litmus test in next year’s Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. With its organisational structure decimated and no MLA or MDC left in its fold, the party is attempting a political reset, signalling resilience and revival with the inauguration of its new Congress Bhawan in Mendipathar. The event was led by MPCC President Vincent H. Pala in the presence of Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma and MPCC Working President Deborah C. Marak. The presence of Saleng A. Sangma at the event was viewed as a calculated projection of strength, as the Congress seeks to consolidate its traditional vote bank and rebuild its cadre base in a region where the National People’s Party (NPP) holds sway and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been making deep inroads.

The GHADC polls will be the first real test of Saleng A. Sangma’s political mettle since his election as Tura MP, and the results will serve as a crucial barometer of the Congress’s relevance on the ground.
Party leaders projected the new Bhawan as a symbol of unity, service, and organisational revival, framing it as more than just an infrastructure project but a pledge to reconnect with the people of Garo Hills.
“This Bhawan will stand as a beacon of service, unity, and commitment to the people. More than an event, the inauguration of the Congress Bhawan is a pledge to serve, empower, and uplift,” The MPCC said in its social media page.
“Join us in celebrating this milestone as we continue our journey together with the people of Garo Hills and the state as a whole,” the statement added.
