The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, in connection with a disturbing incident reported from East Jaintia Hills, bringing the focus sharply on institutional accountability and alleged lapses that may have led to loss of lives.
Acting on media reports that triggered serious human rights concerns, the Commission’s intervention signals heightened scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the systemic failures that continue to plague sensitive sectors in the district.
The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken Suo Motu cognizance pertaining to the unfortunate death of 2 people at Thangsko village in East Jaintia Hills district as appeared in the news item today “2 people dead after alleged dynamite blast in EJH coal mine”. Taking note of the gravity of the allegations and the wider implications on public safety and governance, the Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, to cause an effective enquiry and to submit a detailed inquiry report to the Commission in one month’s time.
