Shillong, October 16: Political tremors are once again rippling through the Meghalaya Congress, as speculation mounts over whether former Shillong MP and current Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala is quietly stepping back — or if a subtle “Delhi diktat” is at work. His prolonged absence from the state had triggered murmurs of a leadership vacuum, deepening unease within a party still struggling to regain lost political ground.
Breaking his silence, Pala dismissed the speculation. Speaking to Meghalaya News 24, he said, “My stay abroad was due to family responsibilities, even my wife is abroad. Recently, I have become a grandfather.” Since his return, the Congress veteran is reportedly back in action — holding strategy meetings and revving up preparations for the upcoming GHADC elections, a crucial political test that could define his grip over the party.
Yet, the suspense lingers. Sources within the party hint that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has been weighing a leadership reshuffle after the GHADC polls, with Pala’s position under quiet review. “Discussions are on to remove Pala, perhaps after the District Council elections,” a source close to the AICC revealed. “But again, this decision will be taken by the high command — sooner or later, he will be replaced.”
Pala’s recent political setbacks — including his defeats in both the Lok Sabha and state Assembly polls — have further weakened his standing.
With the Congress desperate for revival in Meghalaya’s shifting political landscape, all eyes are now on Pala. Will he reassert his command and steady the party’s ship — or will Delhi’s invisible hand redraw the state unit’s power map? The answer, insiders say, will surface only after the GHADC verdict, when the political smoke finally clears over Shillong.
