Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday indicated that the government may not go ahead with the Assembly proceedings on Friday as a mark of respect to the late Shillong MP, Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon, who passed away on Thursday evening.
Sangma, who rushed to Robert Hospital along with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong soon after learning about the MP’s sudden collapse, said the matter would be placed before the Business Advisory Committee for a final decision.
“We have discussed with Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Parliamentary Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, and will have a meeting tomorrow with the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) headed by the Speaker. A decision will be taken tomorrow,” Sangma said.
“I have communicated to the Deputy CM that it would be appropriate for the government not to proceed with the business of the House tomorrow. Even though tomorrow is the day we are scheduled to present the budget, it would make absolute sense, and show respect to the departed soul, if we were to postpone even the presentation of the budget,” he added.
Expressing shock and grief over the sudden demise of the Shillong MP, Sangma recalled his recent meeting with Dr. Syngkon in Delhi, where they had deliberated on development plans for Meghalaya beyond political considerations.
“It is a very shocking moment for all citizens of the state. I had met Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon about two weeks back in Delhi… we discussed the overall future of our state without bringing politics into it, and that was the last meeting and conversation I had with Dr. Ricky Syngkon,” Sangma said.
