Will Continue with VPP, Nongrum Calls Suspension Illegal and Unconstitutional

Shillong: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum on Monday said he will continue with the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) despite his suspension, calling the action “illegal and unconstitutional.”

“I made very clear when I decided to join Voice of the People’s Party, because I expected that it will be real true voice of the people, because of the reason I decided to join the party and that I will not leave the party in future. I am still VPP,” Nongrum said.

He alleged that the suspension was not carried out through the proper channel and claimed that the party’s suspension letter identified him as “Adelbert Nongrum Jaiaw Umsyntiew” instead of referring to him as the MLA of the 17-North Shillong constituency.

“I will not accept they way they suspended me because the way the suspended me it is not through a true channel, it is illegal suspension, unconstitutional suspension,” Nongrum asserted.

Nongrum also referred to the Assembly proceedings following his suspension, saying, “I hope everyone had witness what had happened in the Assembly,” and claimed that the Speaker had initially shifted his seat before restoring it after he challenged the decision.

He maintained that he could approach the court over the matter, saying the VPP leadership could face embarrassment if the suspension was legally challenged.
