Shillong, July 7 — In a decisive move set to reshape the city’s commercial heart, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) 2 government has informed that the complete relocation of hawkers and vendors from Khyndailad will be done by July 22, a date that will “freeze” all unauthorised vending in the area.
“The High Court verdict has strengthened our case and by 22nd of July we expect complete compliance by all vendors. Total relocation of Hawkers and Vendors from Khyndailad will be done before the 22nd July, meaning everything will be freezed on that day itself,” said MDA 2 spokesperson and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Monday.
Lyngdoh further revealed the government’s ambitious post-relocation agenda — the pedestrianisation and beautification of the iconic stretch from the entry point of Khyndailad up to Jail Road on one side and Umsohsun on the other.
“There will be Beautification, there will be padestrianisation and only those staying in that particular area will be issued (vehicle) passes which will allow them to reach their homes and also it will not be throughout the day. We will have timing entry timings and also exit timing,” Lyngdoh stated.
On concerns about residential access, Lyngdoh clarified, “The residents of those cannot randomly drive into that. We will enforce to ensure that pedestrians are safe to walk through. There will be specific hours for them to leave the area or enter the area.”
The enforcement marks a turning point in the state’s urban planning strategy and signals a firm stance on reclaiming public spaces — ushering in a new era for Shillong’s most congested and commercially vital hub.
