West Garo Hills DC Calls Urgent Peace Committee Meet

Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Vibhor Aggarwal has called an urgent meeting of the district’s Peace Committee on Tuesday, reaching out to community elders, clergy and representatives of local development committees as the administration moves swiftly to defuse tensions after protests disrupted the filing of nominations for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections in Tura.
The move comes amid heightened concern within the district administration following the disturbance during the nomination process, prompting authorities to initiate dialogue with key civil society stakeholders in an effort to restore calm and ensure that the democratic process proceeds without further disruption.

According to official sources, notices have been issued to 28 invitees, including the Superintendent of Police who will serve as Member-Secretary, two Meghalaya Civil Service officers, the Chief Executive Officer, church leaders, local leaders and office-bearers of the Tura Development Committee. Representatives from local area development committees have also been invited as part of the administration’s effort to bring together influential voices from across the community to address the situation.
“…a peace committee meeting is scheduled to be held on March 10, 2026 in the conference hall of Tura circuit house at 10 am. In this regard, all the members of the peace committee, Tura and two representatives from each of the local area development committee are requested to attend the said meeting,” the DC said.
