Shillong, May 10: An unidentified body was recovered from a deep, water-filled coal mine pit at Moolait Bri Sumer in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on Sunday afternoon around 12 noon after a challenging retrieval operation carried out by the police with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Police said the body was found floating inside an abandoned coal mine pit inundated with water on Saturday, with the recovery operation facing difficulties due to the substantial depth of the pit and the difficult terrain surrounding the site.
Confirming the recovery, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Rasgania said, “The body was recovered by Police with the assistance of SDRF team. The legal procedure is being followed….Body is being sent for Post-mortem.”
Authorities said the identity of the deceased and the circumstances leading to the death were yet to be ascertained. Police added that further investigation would be initiated following the completion of legal formalities and the post-mortem examination.
