Tynsong on Bangladesh Turmoil: Citizens Desperate to Flee

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Home Police Prestone Tynsong has painted a grim picture of the unfolding crisis in neighbouring Bangladesh, warning that an alarming number of its citizens no longer wish to remain in their own country as desperation grips the nation.

Speaking on the fallout of Bangladesh’s August 2024 political transition, which has coincided with a surge in Islamic fundamentalism and extremist sentiment, Tynsong said, “It seems there are lot of confusion amongst the citizens of Bangladesh, sometimes I feel pity because I could see that they reached to a desparation stage where sometimes it seems they don’t want to stay back in their own country anymore, it seems that they wanted to go out of their country anywhere just for their survival.”

The Deputy CM, while denying having any specific intelligence on the rise of fundamentalism in Bangladesh, reiterated the unprecedented uncertainty gripping the country. “Well that I really don’t know much about it.”

“….for this question I think the government of Bangladesh knows better than anybody else why how these kind of things happened,” he added.

The recent regime change in Bangladesh has been accompanied by a marked rise in Islamist extremism, sparking fears over the erosion of women’s rights, the marginalisation of religious minorities, and an increasingly polarised political landscape.
