Dismissing speculation around conducting narco-analysis on the prime accused in the sensational Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Meghalaya Police on Tuesday firmly ruled out the need for such procedures, citing clear confessions and solid investigative groundwork.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters, “Narco test is done usually when there’s no evidence at all, and Narco analysis is actually banned by the Supreme Court.” He stressed that such tests are not admissible in court and are generally reserved for cases where leads are absent.
“Whatever is revealed during a narco test, it is not admissible in court. It’ll just give us an idea of, you know, probably we get a clue or something from there. But that’s not evidence in itself,” Syiem explained, making it clear that the current case does not fall into that category.
He reaffirmed that both Raj Khushwaha and Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, have already confessed to their roles. “They have already admitted to the crime. We have done the reconstruction (of the crime scene). They have shown us. We have got the evidence in the place of… I don’t see the reason why we should perform (narco analysis test) at this stage,” he stated.
Syiem also confirmed that Raj and Sonam were in a relationship. While the exact motive wasn’t labelled as financial, he pointed to their personal and professional entanglements as key factors. “They wanted something, somebody out, I mean Raja, out of this whole scene, because they had a relationship and they had, because of the customs where they had to agree between the parents and all that, getting married and all that. So they thought, in their own way of thinking… better get rid of this person (Raja),” he said.
With crime scene reconstruction completed and vital admissions secured, police are now preparing to file a watertight chargesheet. Syiem underscored the department’s commitment to a thorough, evidence-led investigation.
