Shillong witnessed swift police action following the circulation of a viral video on social media that levelled serious allegations of threats, abusive language and extortion against personnel of the Shillong Police, prompting a suo-motu criminal case and the arrest of a Home Guard Volunteer.
The video, uploaded on YouTube by one “Karan GoalaExpii” and subsequently shared across multiple platforms, went viral on January 12, 2026, triggering widespread concern and public scrutiny over alleged misconduct involving tourists visiting the city during the Christmas season. Acting promptly, the East Khasi Hills District Police initiated an enquiry to verify the claims and ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
Informing about the action taken, Vivek Syiem, IPS, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, said, “suo-motu case has been registered vide Madanrting Police Station Case No. 08(01)2026, under Sections 308(5)/351(2)/352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Home Guard Volunteer mentioned above has been arrested, removed from all duties and shall be produced before a local Court as per procedure.” The enquiry established that the individual involved is Shri Reganson Kharlor (35 years), a Home Guard Volunteer posted at the Madanrting Traffic Branch, who was on clamping duty at the relevant time. The incident occurred on December 26, 2025, at around 9:35 AM, when a white Maruti Suzuki 800 bearing registration number AS-01-F-1460, proceeding towards Happy Valley, drove past the Home Guard Volunteer near Sawlad and almost dashed him. He then chased the vehicle on foot, took a lift on a passerby’s scooty and intercepted the car at Happy Valley Bazar, where he entered the vehicle, threatened the occupants—residents of Cachar district, Assam—and allegedly demanded ₹1,00,000. The vehicle occupants were subsequently taken towards Madanrting Taxi Stand, where ₹15,000 was allegedly illegally extorted as a ‘fine’ after two of the occupants withdrew money from a nearby ATM. The victims have been contacted and will appear before the police for recording of their statements, while CCTV footage from the relevant locations is being examined to establish the sequence of events. Reiterating the stand of the force, the police stated, “The East Khasi Hills District Police, including the Shillong Traffic Police, reiterate their commitment to public service and maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, abuse of authority and any form of high handedness.”
