The forthcoming bye-election to the Shillong Parliamentary constituency is shaping up to be a multi-cornered contest, with political parties across the spectrum stepping up internal deliberations even as the Election Commission is yet to formally announce the poll schedule. The evolving electoral landscape points to a fragmented contest, with the Voice of the People’s Party already declaring its candidate, while the Congress is expected to follow suit. The ruling National People’s Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party have indicated their keenness to field candidates, signalling a competitive race. Within the ruling coalition, the United Democratic Party is also exploring the possibility of entering the fray, with at least four to five aspirants expressing interest. Adding to the complexity, independent candidates and those outside the mainstream political fold are also preparing to contest, taking the likely number of candidates in the fray to five or six.
Amid the heightened political activity, Meghalaya BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang said, “No finalisation of names have been done, even elections are not declared, the election committee of Meghalaya BJP will then sit down and decide on the name and send it to Delhi for approval. 5- 6 aspiring candidates are there.” He, however, “refused to divulge” further details on the contenders. Reflecting on the party’s prospects, he said, “The impact that vpp had in the last election, I would say it was a combination of various factors. The vote share of BJP will definitely increase when we contest the MP by election.”
The by-election has been necessitated following the demise of sitting Member of Parliament from the Shillong Parliamentary constituency, Ricky A. J. Syngkon, on February 19, 2026. The vacancy has arisen less than two years after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the Voice of the People’s Party leader had secured a decisive victory, defeating his nearest rival by a huge margin.
