Playgrounds Turned into Life-Skills Labs as Meghalaya Launches Bold Education Overhaul

Shillong, July 17: In a powerful move aimed at reshaping the future of its youth, the Education Department of Meghalaya has taken a groundbreaking step under the MPOWER programme, turning school playgrounds across three districts into vibrant life-skills learning zones.

“We’re proud to share the progress following the Life Skills Curriculum Contextualization Workshop under the MPOWER programme of the Government of Meghalaya,” the department declared, signaling a dramatic shift in the state’s approach to education.

Far from the confines of blackboards and chalk, a total of 46 Master Trainers, 1,257 teachers, and 577 school heads have already been equipped to lead this educational transformation. The initiative marks a decisive move away from the traditional “chalk-and-talk” methods toward a challenge-based model focused on real-world readiness.

“This marks a shift from chalk-and-talk to challenge and transformation—preparing every child for a confident, capable, and career-ready future,” the department stated.

The initiative doesn’t just teach—it empowers. Through this dynamic, hands-on model, students are now being encouraged to build resilience, teamwork, and decision-making skills right on their school grounds. Meghalaya’s classrooms are no longer just within four walls—they’re expanding to fields, minds, and futures.
