BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek on Friday stressed that the implementation of regulatory mechanisms like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) or the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) must not harass any Indian citizen.
“You can introduce any kind of mechanism – ILP or MRSSA. However, all citizens of India should not be harassed. No human being should be harassed. That is my clear view and clear point. Nobody should be harassed,” Hek told reporters.
He clarified that the government is actively working to implement the MRSSA to tackle the issue of unabated influx into Meghalaya. Regarding ILP, Hek said the matter is still awaiting a decision from the Centre.
The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution in 2019 urging the central government to implement ILP in the state.
Hek reiterated that the BJP will support the state government’s decision to push for ILP implementation.
When asked if MRSSA is more effective than ILP, Hek responded, “Until and unless we implement it, tell me how we will judge it whether it is good or bad. That is not possible to tell until and unless (such) mechanism is introduced (and implemented).”
