SHILLONG, FEB 27: As political temperatures rise ahead of electoral contests in the Assam, Voice of the People’s Party president and Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Friday firmly dismissed any suggestion that the Assam elections will have any impact in Meghalaya. Indicating that the BJP wave in Assam will have no impact in Meghalaya as the State doesn’t follow any other State, Basaiawmoit said the political trajectory of Meghalaya remains insulated from external currents.
At a time when political analysts are weighing the possibility of cross-border electoral momentum and the effect of electoral mandates in Assam, Basaiawmoit sought to draw a clear demarcation between Assam’s political churn and Meghalaya’s electoral calculus.
“Meghalaya is a different State. It doesn’t follow from any other States. So far, Meghalaya never follows. It does not mean that when there’s a wave of any political party in Assam or in any other side that will have influence in Meghalaya. The politics and political dynamics in Meghalaya is completely different. So I don’t see any impact in this election,” Basaiawmoit said.
