Marking the 77th Republic Day celebrations with a strong emphasis on excellence, service and cultural pride, Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar on Monday felicitated Hally War of Siej village near Sohra, who has been named among the 45 Padma Shri awardees by the Centre on the eve of Republic Day, a recognition that has brought laurels to the State.
The Republic Day programme also witnessed the conferring of prestigious Meghalaya Day Awards across diverse fields. The U Tirot Sing Award for Arts and Literature was presented to eminent poet, writer and translator Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih in recognition of his enduring contribution to literature and cultural expression. The Pa Togan N. Sangma Award for Social Services was awarded to Rev. Fr. Benoy Joseph, widely regarded as the driving force behind the Muktidata Multipurpose Co-operative Society at Tikrikilla, for his sustained work in community development and economic empowerment. The U Kiang Nangbah Award for Sports and Games was conferred on Riiohlang Dhar, who recently earned a place on the FIFA Refereeing International List for 2026, highlighting Meghalaya’s growing presence on the global sports stage.
“We congratulate the Meghalaya Day Awardees of 2026 – Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih, who has been awarded U Tirot Sing Award for Arts & Literature, Father Benoy Joseph, who has received the Pa Togan Sangma Award for Social Services and Riiohlang Dhar, who has been awarded U Kiang Nangbah Award for Sports & Games. We also congratulate all the government employees, who have received the Meghalaya Day Excellence Award,” the Governor said.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills R.M. Kurbah and other dignitaries were present at the programme, which was marked by vibrant cultural performances and colourful tableaux showcasing the initiatives and achievements of various government departments, adding depth and vibrancy to the Republic Day celebrations.
