Meghalaya Chief Secretary Directs Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Projects for Mine-Affected Areas Within One Month

Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong on Thursday voiced concern over the behaviour of young people in the State, stating that despite being aware of laws and regulations, many continue to comply with them only out of fear of enforcement rather than a sense of civic responsibility. Speaking at the Naveen Nyaya Sanhita Exhibition organised by the Department of Home (Police) and the Office of the Director General of Police, Government of Meghalaya, he said Meghalaya has nearly completed two years under the new criminal laws implemented from July 1, 2024, replacing colonial-era legislations that had remained in force for over 150 years.
Highlighting the T3 framework — Timeline, Technology and Trust — Tynsong said, “The issue with the state of Meghalaya specially the young people they know the laws, they know each and every lines, but the problem is that whatever law is being implemented by the law enforcers or by different departments in the government the behavior that we have here is very very concerning. The laws are followed not for public safety but fearing law enforcers. Comply this Because don’t want to be fined.” He urged citizens, particularly the youth, to voluntarily follow laws and SOPs for public safety and welfare rather than merely to avoid penalties.
Calling for a change in mindset, Tynsong said, “My dear young boys and girls Let us change the behavior, its time we need to change. These SoPs that we put in place it should start from me and then our family members that yes I need to abide the laws, SoPs, if you think imposition is done by the government that is wrong, the government beings in regulations for your own good for citizens of the state. Therefore, I request all of us, or Rongbha Shnongs, I think it’s time we need to fight against the concerning behavior.” The programme was also marked by the launching of the MedLEaPR SOP and the recognition of Dr Benjamin Ch. Momin. Also present were Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, Director General of Police, who delivered the welcome and keynote address, Frederick R.
