Seven Killed, One Injured in Explosion at Alleged Illegal Coal Mine in East Jaintia Hills

As many as seven labourers were killed and one injured in an explosion at an alleged illegal coal mine in the Thangsko area of Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday morning, prompting an immediate response from the district police and disaster management authorities.


Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, Vikash Kumar confirmed the incident, stating, “Our team has confirmed that the incident took place this morning.” He said one injured person was shifted from Sutnga PHC and referred to Shillong for further treatment. Police are also seeking assistance from the State Disaster Response Force to initiate rescue operations. “We are seeking help from SDRF team,” Kumar added.


The explosion is suspected to have occurred during coal mining activities at the site, which is believed to be an illegal operation. When asked about the explosion, the SP said, “Yes, as per information.” A police team has been dispatched to the spot to assess the situation, while authorities said detailed reports from the ground are awaited as investigations continue.
