CBI Nabs Three Postal Officials in Meghalaya Bribery Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three officials of the Postal Department — the Assistant Branch Post Master of Williamnagar, the Sub-Division Inspector of Williamnagar, and a Postman from Rongjeng Sub-Post Office in East Garo Hills — in connection with a bribery case.

According to the CBI, a case was registered on October 4, 2025, based on a complaint filed by a Gram Dak Sevak (Block Post Master) of Rongjeng Sub-Office, East Garo Hills. The complainant alleged that the accused had demanded an undue advantage equivalent to two months’ salary for releasing his dues that had been withheld by the Postal Department for the past ten months.

After negotiations, the accused reportedly agreed to accept a bribe of ₹30,000 and instructed the complainant to pay the amount once his salary was disbursed. Acting on this information, CBI officials laid a trap and apprehended the Assistant Branch Post Master of Williamnagar red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of ₹30,000 from the complainant. Subsequently, the Sub-Division Inspector and the Postman were also arrested from Shillong, Meghalaya, and Ambassa in Dhalai district, Tripura, respectively, on October 7, 2025.

Searches conducted at the office and residential premises of the accused in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, and Upanagar village in Ambassa, Tripura, led to the recovery of incriminating documents and the seizure of ₹2.3 lakh in cash from the residence of the accused Postman.

The arrested individuals will be produced before the competent court. The CBI stated that the investigation is ongoing.
