Shillong: Former United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary and former MLA Dr Jemino Mawthoh is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 12, more than a year after he resigned from the UDP in May 2025.
His move is expected to add a new dimension to Meghalaya’s evolving political landscape, particularly amid growing speculation over realignments involving regional political leaders.
Sources close to Mawthoh said the former legislator held a meeting with his supporters on Saturday, following which the decision to join the BJP was taken. The formal induction is expected to take place on September 12.
Mawthoh, who had served as the UDP’s general secretary, resigned from the regional party in May 2025. He subsequently remained outside active party politics for over a year before deciding to formally align with the BJP.
His decision to join the saffron party comes at a time when Meghalaya’s political space is witnessing increased speculation over possible shifts and realignments among leaders and legislators.
