Elevated Road Plan Dropped; Four-Lane Road Proposed from Umshyrpi Bridge to Barik Point

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Public Works Department, Meghalaya Prestone Tynsong on Monday said the State government has decided to drop the proposal for an elevated road between Umshyrpi Bridge and Barik Point after it was found to be not feasible, with authorities instead opting for a four-lane road along the same stretch following detailed deliberations among key stakeholders.

He said the decision was taken after a detailed meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, where officials from the Public Works Department, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and representatives of the Army, including the General Officer Commanding, reviewed the proposal and agreed to conduct a joint inspection of the area to assess the land requirements for the revised plan.

“We had a meeting detailed meeting now that proposal of elevated road from Umshyrpi Bridge to Barik points seems to be not that feasible, we decided to have four lane right from the Umshyrpi Bridge right upto the Barik point. Instead of elevated road it will be four lane. That day we had a joint meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, even GOC has represented himself and we had PWD, NHIDCL, together with the Army decided to have a joint inspection and ultimately woked out the land required,” Tynsong said.
