In a significant push toward addressing long-standing gaps in Meghalaya’s education landscape, Meghalaya State Planning Board Chairman Metbah Lyngdoh has emphasized the need for collective responsibility and collaboration among all stakeholders to bring about real, lasting reforms in the education sector. Lyngdoh , who recently convened a comprehensive review meeting with the Education Department, stated that while the department has made commendable strides in identifying and proposing crucial changes, the government alone cannot carry the burden of reform.
“We had this review on the Education Department as far as the Planning Board is concerned and we have discussed at length. It was a pretty long meeting because we understand very well that a lot of things need to be done in the department. But one very important point here, I would like to mention—the government alone, I could see, it will be very difficult. We need to ensure that all the stakeholders play their own role to ensure that it’s complete reform as far as education is concerned,” Lyngdoh said.
Reflecting on the progress presented during the meeting, he acknowledged the department’s sincerity and efforts in addressing key gaps. “I’ve seen whatever they have presented on that day, that they have really worked on the changes that need to be done as far as the Education Department. So all were responsible for that. They have really put their heads together to see. But other stakeholders also have to be taken into consideration, and they also have to see that they are equally responsible for that change in the Education Department.”
When asked if the concept of education reforms being introduced could become a reality in Meghalaya, Lyngdoh responded with optimism. “Anything is possible always. We should always have a very positive mind. The only thing is that those who are part and parcel of that change—as I have mentioned, stakeholders—they have to understand their role. What role they have to play? What role they can play? That is very important. And everyone has to be there to see the change. Putting the blame on others we will reach nowhere.”
The high-level review meeting chaired by Lyngdoh marks a critical step in the Meghalaya State Planning Board’s renewed focus on reshaping the educational framework in the state. As the government continues to advocate for reforms, the spotlight now turns to stakeholders to shoulder their part in transforming Meghalaya’s educational future.
