Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, who is also the TMC Legislative Party Leader in Meghalaya, is already strategising for the 2028 Assembly electoral battle, but whether his political calculations will lead to a major political shift next year remains an open question. Sangma has hinted that the five Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs in Meghalaya may not necessarily contest the next Assembly elections under the party’s banner, keeping open the possibility of an alternative political arrangement. Refusing to disclose whether the TMC would contest the elections as a party, he maintained that electoral strategies were not meant to be revealed in advance, particularly when political parties were preparing to take on their rivals. His remarks have raised questions over the electoral roadmap of the five TMC legislators and whether a significant political realignment could emerge ahead of the 2028 polls.
Asked whether the TMC, as a political party, would contest the 2028 Assembly elections, Sangma declined to give a direct answer, invoking the element of surprise in electoral politics. “Political Stretegise you have to understand that when you’re in the war, you don’t put your cards on the table. But then only whatever is required to be done at the right time, this would be all visible at the right moment, right time,” he said.
Explaining why he was unwilling to disclose the party’s plans, Sangma said decisions on how the party would approach the elections, plan its campaign and strategise against political opponents would be revealed only when the time was right. “How we do? how we plan ?, how we strategize and Certain element of surprise is always needed in politics while we fight against our rivals political opponents, So You will not get this reply from me at this juncture because anything that forms a part of our political strategy.
