“A wonderful structure,” remarked Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijaya Sankar, visibly impressed by the upcoming New Meghalaya Legislative Assembly complex at Mawdiangdiang.
“Before entering the campus, I caught a glimpse of the Assembly Building. I must say, it is a wonderful structure. I am truly grateful to the Government of Meghalaya for constructing such an impressive facility,” he said, praising the government’s efforts during a tree plantation programme held at the site.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who was also present at the event, expressed confidence that the long-awaited building will soon be ready for use. While lauding the visible progress, he acknowledged that work on the main Assembly Hall is still underway due to complex technical challenges. “These are essential for ensuring that the hall functions effectively in line with modern legislative standards,” the Chief Minister said, explaining that the delay stems from the need to implement advanced security protocols and specialised sound treatment to address reverberation and echo control.
Despite the pending technical work, the Chief Minister assured that discussions are ongoing with the Speaker and the concerned departments to expedite the remaining tasks. He noted that substantial headway has been made and voiced optimism over the project’s timely completion.
Sangma also extended appreciation to the Governor for attending the event despite recent health challenges. He said, “His presence is a testament to his unwavering dedication to public service,” and thanked all MLAs for their participation, calling the moment a significant milestone in the state’s legislative history.
Once complete, the New Meghalaya Assembly complex is expected to become a symbol of the state’s growth—merging architectural innovation with environmental responsibility to serve as a modern legislative hub for generations to come.
