Can BJP break its two-seat barrier in 2028 Meghalaya Assembly election?

Can the BJP break its two-seat barrier in the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly election? The question assumes significance as the saffron party seeks to expand its electoral footprint in a State where it has so far remained limited to two Assembly seats. Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander Laloo Hek has expressed confidence that the BJP will lead the next government in Meghalaya, while acknowledging the complexities of the State’s political landscape.

Hek said the party had conducted extensive surveys to understand the challenges before it and was working to address them through a systematic outreach programme. “We have also done lots of survey work. It is a complex situation and it will take a lot of time to explain. But now we have realised this complexity and we are going to sort it out one by one, as much as we can reach out,” he said.

Hek also indicated that several prominent and big political leaders of the State, including sitting legislators and former MLAs, were interested in joining the BJP, but declined to disclose their identities, citing political confidentiality.

“Big names we don’t want to come out, because politics as much as it is kept confidential , it is better for the party. Many big names are very interested to join the party, but we will not give you any name now as it is a confidential matter. We cannot tell you, as there will be so many problems that may arise if we do. The election is one and a half years away, so six months before the time you will see everything will be in order. I will tell you, sitting legislators are also there and ex-MLAs are also there. But I will not name any of them now. It is too early to name them because politics can change overnight also, so we do not want to divulge anybody’s name at present,” he said.

Hek also called for greater participation of young people in politics, saying established leaders should create space for a new generation. “It is high time to involve the youth in politics. We need the new generation to be there in politics. As for my case, I have been serving for more than 30 years in politics, so we should give space also for our youth to join politics,” the BJP MLA said.

On young people joining the BJP, he said the choice should be left to individuals but stressed the need for greater youth participation in active politics. “Joining BJP, it is up to their wisdom, whichever party they want to join. But youth should come forward and join active politics,” he added.
