Will Mawkyrwat MLA and former PHE Minister Renikton L. Tongkhar return to the National People’s Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections? The question is gaining ground amid a significant political realignment in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills, where over 3,000 members from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) joined the ruling NPP on Saturday, reinforcing its grassroots presence ahead of upcoming electoral contests in 2028.
The induction programme, organised by the NPP Mawkyrwat District, witnessed the participation of senior party leadership, with State president Prestone Tynsong leading the proceedings.
Members and key supporters associated with the UDP legislator from Mawkyrwat formally switched allegiance during the event, signalling a shift in the local political landscape.
Addressing the gathering, Tynsong welcomed the new entrants and urged them to work towards strengthening the party’s organisational base, emphasising development at the grassroots and expansion of the party’s support network.
Political sources indicated that Mawkyrwat MLA and former PHE Minister Renikton L. Tongkhar is likely to return to the NPP at the end of the current term, a development that may reshape political alignments in the constituency.
