The Meghalaya Police have arrested former Member of District Council Sofior Rahman in connection with the recent communal unrest in the Garo Hills region, even as Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong said 27–28 people have already been arrested as part of a widening crackdown following the disturbances that triggered tension across parts of the region. Officials said the action against Rahman followed allegations that social media posts attributed to him had incited tension, prompting law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to identify those allegedly involved in spreading provocative content and disturbing communal harmony.
Police in West Garo Hills have continued investigations into the unrest, examining digital evidence and gathering local inputs to establish the sequence of events that led to the disturbances. Authorities indicated that the probe is not confined to a single district and that action could extend across the wider Garo Hills region as investigators track individuals suspected of playing a role in escalating tensions.
