Woman Missing Since March 20 Found Dead in River Near Rynjah; Probe Underway

SHILLONG, APR 6: The body of a woman who had been missing since March 20 was found floating in a river near Lapalang and Rynjah on Monday afternoon.

Local residents spotted the body wrapped in a sack and informed village authorities, who alerted the Rynjah Police Station.

A team along with the Crime Scene Unit reached the site and collected evidence before retrieving the body.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem who visited the spot, confirmed the identity of the deceased as 39-year-old Eilang Phawa of Lawjynriew, Nongthymmai, originally from West Jaiñtia Hills. She had been reported missing since March 20, 2026.

A missing report was registered at Rynjah Police Station and look-out notices were sent to other districts and states, but no information was received about her whereabouts.

“Today, her body was found in a plastic sack tied and thrown into the river adjoining Lapalang and Rynjah,” he said.

The body has been taken to North Eastern Hill Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), where a post-mortem will be conducted on Tuesday.

“A case will be registered and police are working to ensure that the culprits are brought to book. We have certain clues on the suspect,” Syiem said.

The SP added that the body was in a decomposed state and the cause of death would be confirmed after the post-mortem.

“Once the report is available, we can establish the kind of injuries and how the deceased was killed. We will investigate further to know the motive and circumstances of the crime.”
