Shillong witnessed a historic milestone on Thursday as Union Finance Minister Smti. Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the city’s first-ever shopping mall—Polo Commercial Complex—ushering in a new era of urban transformation under the Smart Cities Mission. The ₹100.33 crore marvel stands as a testament to Meghalaya’s rapid infrastructural leap, blending modern commercial architecture with sustainable urban planning.
“This marks a significant step in Shillong’s development journey,” Sitharaman said during the glittering inauguration ceremony, flanked by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Affairs Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar, and Health Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, alongside top officials from the Urban Affairs and Municipal departments.
Spread across 1.26 acres with a built-up area of 1.70 lakh sq ft, the state-of-the-art complex features 109 retail outlets and 8 commercial offices, offering a dynamic range of spaces from 4470.40 sq ft to 396 sq ft. The mall also houses a sprawling 15,270 sq ft food court and gaming zone, poised to become a leisure and retail hotspot in the heart of the city.
Designed to international standards, the complex is equipped with five lifts, 12 escalators, 5 emergency exits, 86 car parking bays, and 50 two-wheeler slots. From an infrastructure standpoint, it is fortified with a 75 KL sewage treatment plant, water treatment systems, 110 CCTV cameras, and a full-fledged Building Management System (BMS).
Keeping pace with global sustainability norms, the mall incorporates rooftop solar energy solutions and a rainwater harvesting mechanism—marking a green shift in urban commercial construction.
From laying its foundation stone on October 28, 2020, to completion in December 2024, the Polo Commercial Complex has emerged as a proud symbol of Shillong’s transition into a smart city with world-class civic amenities.
