UDP Expels Three MLAs Amid NPP Switch

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Monday expelled three of its legislators from the party’s primary membership, as they are all set to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), with a merger letter submitted to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma.

In an expulsion letter dated October 19, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh informed Paul Lyngdoh, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Nijorki Sungoh of the decision to remove them from the party.

“As evident from the local news today, it is clear that you all will be joining the National People’s Party, therefore, with powers vested in me as President of the United Democratic Party, I hereby expel the three of you from the primary membership of the Party, with effect from today the 19th October 2026,” Metbah Lyngdoh stated in the letter.

The letter was addressed to the three legislators individually. Sungoh was absent when the letter concerning him was submitted, as he is currently in Kolkata for a medical check-up.

The development comes after the Speaker recognised the merger of eight of the UDP’s 12 MLAs with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), triggering a further realignment within the regional party.
