SHILLONG, OCT 5: In a determined effort to promote road discipline and curb instances of drunken driving, the Ri Bhoi District Traffic Branch has realised fines amounting to ₹2.93 lakh (Rupees Two Lakh Ninety-Three Thousand) during a series of intensive vehicle checking drives conducted across the district.
The operation, aimed at ensuring safer roads and responsible driving behaviour, was carried out under the supervision of traffic officials in key areas where violations are frequently reported.
Police said in a social media page, “Traffic branch of the District conducted vehicle checking to curb drunken driving and ensure road safety.”
“Violators were being compounded accordingly and a total amount of Rs.2,93,000 (Two lakh ninety three thousand) Fine was realised during checking,” police added.
According to the district Police, the drive targeted motorists found under the influence of alcohol and those flouting essential traffic norms. All violators were compounded strictly in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act, and penalties were imposed to deter repeat offences.
Police emphasised that the purpose of the campaign was not merely punitive but also preventive, aiming to raise awareness among drivers about the serious risks associated with drunken driving.
The Ri Bhoi Traffic Branch has reiterated its commitment to maintaining vigilance on the roads and ensuring that commuters adhere to safety regulations. Authorities further assured that such enforcement drives will continue periodically to instil a sense of accountability among motorists and to safeguard the lives of both drivers and pedestrians.
