NPP’s Limison D. Sangma Files Nomination Before Speaker for Deputy Speaker Post in Meghalaya Assembly

The ruling National People’s Party has nominated Limison D. Sangma, Legislator from Raksamgre Assembly constituency, for the election to the post of Deputy Speaker in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. On Wednesday, Limison filed his nomination before Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, emerging as the lone candidate in the fray after the sudden resignation of T.D. Shira on Monday morning left the post vacant.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, when asked about the choice, said, “We have discussed with different leaders from the party and after discussion, we felt that he is a very senior person and keeping his seniority in mind and also his experience in the government and in the assembly. So, we feel that it would be a good person to bring the post of Deputy Speaker.”

With opposition parties opting not to field any candidate, Limison stands unchallenged as the sole nominee. Today is the last day for filing of nominations, tomorrow marks the deadline for withdrawal, and the election is slated for September 12.
