Night-long crackdown nets 194 violations in Shillong, fines touch ₹2.46 lakh

In a concerted push to tighten traffic enforcement and curb dangerous night-time road behaviour, East Khasi Hills Police carried out a coordinated special naka drive across Shillong during the intervening night of April 25 and 26, underscoring an intensified enforcement push to curb rising night-time traffic violations and strengthen road safety.

Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills District, Vivek Syiem informed that the operation, conducted under the supervision of the SP (City/Traffic) and Additional SP Traffic, covered key city sectors — Sadar, Laitumkhrah and Lumdiengjri — through simultaneous, multi-location checks aimed at addressing violations that typically spike after dark.

Targeting offences that pose a direct risk to road safety, the drive focused on drunk driving, illegal modification of exhaust systems and lights, use of black-tinted glasses, and verification of vehicle documents under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.  The SP said, “During the drive, a total of 194 violations were detected and fines amounting to ₹2,46,000 were imposed.”

More than 100 personnel were deployed, including all In-Charges of Traffic Branches and Officers-in-Charge of police stations, with each naka point placed under the supervision of gazetted officers to ensure uniform enforcement and operational coordination.

The exercise underscores the district police’s resolve to maintain sustained pressure on errant motorists and reinforce adherence to traffic norms. He added, “deterring violations, enhancing compliance and improving road safety across the district.”
