MPSC Reform Report to Reach Cabinet Before July 10, Confirms Chief Secretary Wahlang

The long-anticipated reform proposal for the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) is nearing completion and is expected to be placed before the state Cabinet before July 10, Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang informed.

Speaking on the demand for structural overhaul, Wahlang said, “As desired by NGOs and in fact by the Khasi Students’ Union that MPSC needs relooked and perhaps some reforms need to be undertaken.”

He revealed that in response to the public call for change, the state government had constituted a dedicated committee headed by Senior Principal Secretary Frederick Kharkongor. “They have sat multiple times,” Wahlang said, noting the seriousness with which the committee approached its task.

To ensure the reform suggestions are robust and comprehensive, the committee also consulted eminent personalities, including former UPSC Chairman Professor Dr. David R. Syiemlieh. “They have taken guidance also from the former chairman of UPSC… and other experts,” Wahlang stated.

The Chief Secretary added that the committee is currently finalising the draft. “They are now compiling the report,” he said, adding, “Report will be submitted in about 10 days’ time from today.”

Wahlang further assured that the government is committed to acting on the committee’s findings swiftly. “We are hoping by this month end, the report will be studied,” he said. “And by July before the 10th of July approximately, it will be taken up by the Cabinet.”

The move to reform the MPSC comes amid growing pressure from civil society organisations and student bodies, particularly the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) emphasised the urgent need for the improvement of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) to enhance governance, uphold meritocracy, curb corruption, and promote transparency and accountability.
