Shillong, Oct 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday announced that the complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Meghalaya is expected by October 14, marking an unusually early retreat amid one of the most deficient monsoon seasons in recent years.
According to the IMD, Meghalaya recorded the highest rainfall deficit in the country this year, with precipitation levels plummeting 56 per cent below normal. The state received only 690.7 mm of rainfall against the normal 1,555.4 mm during the core monsoon period between June 1 and July 28.
The IMD’s regional office noted that despite scattered showers in isolated pockets over the past few weeks, the overall monsoon activity remained weak and inconsistent. “Complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Meghalaya is expected positively by tomorrow,” the department stated.
