MHRC Orders Compensation in Rimpu Bagan Human Rights Violation Case

In a significant indictment of police action in West Garo Hills, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recommended monetary compensation for victims of human rights violations during a police operation and detention at Rimpu Bagan in Tura on July 22, 2022.
The Commission had registered 30 cases alleging human rights violations arising from the operation. While 15 complaints were later withdrawn by the complainants, the MHRC conducted a detailed enquiry into the remaining 15 cases. After examining evidence presented by both parties, the Commission passed its final order on January 29, 2026, directing the Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department, to pay compensation of ₹50,000 each to the affected complainants. The recommendation has been made under Section 18(e) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, underscoring official accountability for violations committed during law enforcement operations.
